What is included in a BMW service?

BMW service

Servicing your BMW is an important part of caring for your car, ensuring that any faults are dealt with immediately and that the car remains safe to drive. What is included in your BMW service varies slightly depending on the type of service your car needs. Your car’s service schedule is determined by its model and age, outlined in your owner’s manual. Typically, a service will involve changing engine oil, replacing other fluids, checking that your brake pads and timing belts are working correctly, and replacing them if needed.

To help you learn more about a BMW service, we have outlined a servicing schedule your car might follow and what to expect during a service.

BMW service schedule

Each BMW will have its own servicing schedule that you must follow to ensure your car is working correctly and is safe to drive. The schedule will vary depending on the model of your car and its age, but you might find the following in your user manual:

  • Every 15,000 km or annually – change your engine oil, replace the oil filter and coolant
  • Every 30,000 km or every two years – inspect and replace fuel filters
  • Every 45,000 km or every three years – replace brake fluid and replace transmission fluid on manual transmission  vehicles
  • Every 90,000 km or every six years – replace engine air filter and spark plug, inspect and replace brake pads and rotors, replace transmission fluid on automatic transmission vehicles
  • Every 140,000 km or every nine years – replace timing belts and hoses

You must check your car’s service schedule and ensure you book it for the correct service. Any experienced mechanic will ensure that your car receives the right service, but make sure they know the schedule and the services your car has previously had.

What is included in a BMW service?

As we mentioned earlier, what is included in your service varies depending on your vehicle and the age of it. A service includes various services that help keep your BMW running smoothly, ensuring your safety while driving. You can expect some of the following services as part of your BMW car service:

Air conditioning check

Your BMW’s air conditioning system will be inspected to ensure its effectiveness and performance. It will be tested at different temperatures to ensure it meets Australia’s changing weather conditions.

Brake inspection

Your brake pads, rotors/drums, and brake fluid level will be inspected, along with the brake lines, to ensure your brake system is working correctly. Any signs of wear and tear or damages will be addressed to ensure your car remains safe to drive.

Car battery test

Your car battery will be tested to determine its charge level and overall condition. Doing so allows mechanics to see if the battery needs to be replaced.

Check transmission and drive fluid levels

Your car’s transmission fluid and drive fluid levels will be inspected as part of your service to ensure they are at a safe level. If they are too low, they will be topped up as part of your service.

Check visible parts for leaks and damage

All accessible parts of your car will have a visual inspection, too, where your mechanic will look for signs of cracks, fluid leaks, damage, or excessive wear.

Check the drive belt for wear

Your drive belt will be checked, too, ensuring that it works correctly and is free from damage. Typically, a mechanic looks for cracks, glazing, and other damage that could impact performance.

Check windshield wiper and washer system

Most services involve inspecting your wiper blades and checking for wear and tear. In harsh weather, your wiper and washer system ensures visibility, so these must be tested to ensure they remain effective.

Engine oil and filter change

The engine oil and filter will be drained and replaced to meet the new BMW standards.

Fluid change

Several of your car’s fluids must be changed at your service to ensure your car runs smoothly. This includes your transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, and other relevant fluids.

Fuel filter and injector

Your fuel filter will be checked and replaced if it is clogged. The injectors are also inspected to ensure they are clean and follow proper spray patterns.

Fuel system

A thorough inspection is carried out of your fuel system, ensuring optimal fuel delivery, keeping your car running smoothly and saving you spending more than you should on fuel.

Road test

Your BMW is taken on a short test drive as part of your service. Its performance is accessed, along with its handling and brake responsiveness, to spot any abnormalities.

Safety inspection

All relevant components will be inspected to ensure your BMW meets safety standards.

Tyre service

The tread depth on all tyres is measured, and they will be inspected for signs of wear and damage. Your tyre pressure will also be adjusted to ensure they meet BMW guidelines.
